Kainga is a roguelite village-builder built out of short Challenges. You pick a Thinker, drop a Campfire Hearth, and then have one run's worth of time to convert whatever the biome gave you into a village that can feed itself, survive the weather, and finish the Challenge Festival that ends the run. Everything in a Challenge is temporary; only Karma, unlocked technology groups and a handful of carried-over units survive it.
This guide is the working part of that loop: what things cost, what each structure consumes and produces, which houses give which population and which weather protection, and the decisions that quietly lock you out of options later. Numbers come from the official Kainga Encyclopedia at kainga.wiki.gg, read through the MediaWiki API as raw wikitext, because the rendered pages show ingredient icons instead of quantities. Every table below is generated from those infobox fields — nothing here is estimated, and where the wiki does not carry a number, the cell says so.
What version this is written for
Kainga 1.2.21, the patch released 25 June 2025, which follows Update 1.2 "Points of Interest" (8 June 2025). 1.0 released on 6 December 2022; early access began 11 November 2021. Those dates come from Steam's news API for app 1269710 (api.steampowered.com/ISteamNews/GetNewsForApp/v2/?appid=1269710) and from the wiki's own release field.
Two notes on the identifiers. The queue item that produced this guide carried the link steamcommunity.com/app/1260280/guides, which is not this game; Kainga is Steam app 1269710 (store.steampowered.com/api/appdetails?appids=1269710 confirms the name and the 6 December 2022 release date). And the newest item on that news feed now is "ShantyTown Release!" (16 April 2026), which is a different game by the same solo developer, not a Kainga patch — so 1.2.21 is still the latest Kainga build as of this writing.
The wiki is actively maintained but unevenly: its Shelter and Other technology pages were last edited 18 June 2026 and the Materials page 22 February 2026, while the Food and Resources technology pages and the Thinkers page were last touched in 2024 (17 November, 28 July and 13 October respectively). The Food and Resources numbers therefore predate Update 1.2 and should be treated as one patch generation behind the rest.
How to read the numbers
The wiki keeps one TechInfo infobox per technology and one PassiveTechInfo per passive, and those fields are exact:
- Karma — the cost to buy that technology from the Karma Shop after its group is unlocked. A dash means the technology has no karma cost and comes with its group.
- Chance — the wiki's "Chance to Appear". The Technologies page is explicit that this is computed over all technologies currently unlocked and available, and that "the percent chance for a given Technology to appear in each Challenge may be different". Treat it as a relative weight, not a promised draw rate.
- Build materials — one entry per unit.
Clay, Clayis two Clay.Chosen WallsandChosen Roofare placeholders resolved by the house you chose (see the housing section). - Produces — the number of icons in the infobox, i.e. units per production cycle.
- Footprint — tiles,
WxD. A dagger (†) means the page states no footprint at all; the infobox then prints its own2x2default — or the literalNone, which is what the fourteen Beast and Walker technologies store — and either is a template fallback rather than data, so do not read it as a measurement.
What the wiki does not carry, and therefore what this guide does not claim: cycle times. No infobox on the wiki has a duration or rate field. The encyclopedia describes production speed in words only — "slowly produces Clay from nothing" for the Clay Pit, "produce a lot of Food very quickly" for the Fishing Net — and the wiki's own descriptions are not consistent enough to rank one structure against another. There are no per-minute ratios anywhere in this guide, because there is no source for them. Where a rate matters, the honest answer is the number of units per cycle plus the wiki's wording, and both are printed below.
The loop, in the order the game asks you to do it
- Think at Inspiration. Inspiration are floating orbs of light around the map, each carrying an icon for the type of technology its Idea can provide. Send the Thinker to one and you are offered three options, drawn randomly from all technologies you have unlocked — filtered for compatibility. The Technologies page gives the clean example: choose the Vrisk House, which cannot take attachments, and no future Idea will ever offer an attachment technology such as the Blastpowder Distillery.
- Or take a Passive instead. Opting out of any Inspiration type lets you pick a Passive technology instead. Passives cannot be built but change the rules — full-speed hauling, doubled chopping, immunity to a hazard.
- Build, feed, house. Shelters consume Food to produce Braves and must be occupied by at least one Brave to produce, and they are the only way to raise your population cap.
- Spend Festivals. Four Festivals are available in a Challenge: three unique to your Thinker and one that completes the Challenge. After a certain number of other technologies, a Festival Inspiration appears above the Hearth and the Thinker walks home on their own. The Challenge Festival is the last thing you build; everything you planned for was to make that possible.
- Karma, then the Skyloft. Completing Challenges accrues Karma. Karma buys technology groups and individual technologies from the Karma Shop in the Skyloft, which is what carries progress between runs. The Starting group is unlocked the first time you launch the game; the rest are bought, and some, such as the Blueprint group, need a Quest completed first.
What the wiki records for the groups — 220 technology infoboxes in total — is a fair picture of where the bulk of the game sits:
| Tech group | Technologies on the wiki | Karma costs seen on individual techs |
|---|---|---|
| Group 5 | 65 | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 |
| Starting | 42 | 2 |
| Group 2 | 33 | 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 |
| Group 3 | 31 | 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
| Group 1 | 19 | 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 |
| Blueprint | 17 | 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 |
| no group in the infobox (all 7 are Festivals) | 7 | free |
| Group 4 | 3 | 2, 3 |
| n/a (Karma Shop, Uniques Tinkerer) | 2 | free |
| Unknown (Fertilizing Termites) | 1 | free |
Step 1 — the Hearth you place first, and the Totems you should hold back on
| Structure | Karma | Chance | Build materials | Footprint | Health | Builders | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Campfire Hearth | — | 100% | 1 Logs | 2x2† | infinite | 8 | Must be placed before anything else; its radius is your initial claimed territory |
| Resource Totem | — | 100% | none listed | 1x1 | Unknown | 8 | Claims a fixed radius around the totem; each one built increases the world Ante by 1 |
| Karma Shop | n/a | — | Fabric, Fabric, Chosen Roof, Bricks | 4x4 | Unknown | 2 | Opens later in the Challenge (staffed by a Scrollkeeper); a Thinker may buy one of three technologies there |
| Uniques Tinkerer | n/a | — | Fabric, Fabric, Chosen Roof, Bricks | 4x4 | Unknown | 2 | Same, but it only makes Unique technologies available |
| Storage | — | 7.3% | Chosen Walls, Chosen Roof | 2x2† | 800 | 2 | Materials inside stop degrading |
Three things follow from that table, and they are the first ten minutes of every run.
- The Hearth's own radius is the only free territory you get. The wiki's advice is to put it where resources are dense, because Braves will not automatically use resources outside claimed land: "Braves won't automatically use resources outside of the claimed land area."
- Every Totem is a permanent tax. Each Resource Totem "increases the world Ante by 1, increasing the frequency and intensity of events". Expanding to grab ore or bamboo is a real trade against how hard the weather and raids will hit you later in the same Challenge. Expand for what you are actually going to use this run.
- Place Storage early. Logs are the material the wiki singles out as degrading ("It is produced by only a limited number of technologies, and degrades if not used"), and Storage is a Starting-group technology with the third-highest appearance chance in the Development group. A pile of rotting Logs is the classic silent failure.
Step 2 — Food, which is the only thing standing between you and a second Brave
Every ordinary Shelter consumes Food to produce a Brave, so Food production is the first thing that has to work. The complete Food list, with counts exactly as the wiki stores them:
| Technology | Karma | Chance | Build materials | Consumes | Produces (per cycle) | Placement | Footprint | Health | Builders |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bakery | — | 8.4% | Clay, Clay | 1 Reeds | 1 Food | Attachment | 2x2† | 300 | 3 |
| Bread Factory | 6 | 3.3% | Chosen Walls, Chosen Walls, Chosen Walls, Chosen Roof, Chosen Roof, Chosen Roof | — | 1 Food | — | 4x6 | 300 | 6 |
| Ceramic Crop Pots | 3 | 5% | Ceramics | 1 Ceramics | 1 Food | — | 1x1 | 50 | 1 |
| Chef's Wok | 4 | 3.3% | Ceramics | — | 2 Food | Hearth | 2x2† | 200 | 1 |
| Crop Row | — | 8.4% | Reeds | 1 Reeds | 4 Food | Grass | 1x4 | 50 | 1 |
| Egg Harvester | 3 | 6.7% | Clay, Reeds | — | 1 Food | Attachment | 2x2† | 400 | 3 |
| Featherwing Coop | 4 | 5.8% | Logs, Clay, Clay, Clay, Clay | — | 2 Food | Cliff Edge | 2x2 | 300 | 1 |
| Fisherman's Warf | 7 | 3.3% | Chosen Walls, Chosen Walls, Logs, Chosen Walls, Chosen Roof, Chosen Roof, Chosen Roof | — | 1 Food | Over Water | 4x4 | 300 | 6 |
| Fishing Net | 3 | 5% | Bamboo | — | 3 Food | Over Water | 2x4 | 100 | 1 |
| Fishing Tower | 3 | 5.8% | Bamboo, Bamboo | — | 1 Food | Over Water | 1x2 | 100 | 2 |
| Fishmonger | 2 | 9.2% | Bamboo, Bamboo | 1 Food | 2 Food | Attachment | 2x2† | 300 | 3 |
| Foraging Hut | 2 | 3.3% | Bamboo, Bamboo, Logs, Logs | — | 1 Food, 1 Random Resource | — | 2x2† | 300 | 1 |
| Inle Farm | 2 | 4.2% | Bamboo, Reeds | 1 Bamboo | 2 Food | Water | 1x2 | 50 | 1 |
| Mastadon Milker | 3 | 3.3% | Logs, Logs | — | 1 Food | Attachment | 2x2† | 400 | 3 |
| Mighty Pie | 2 | 2.5% | Reeds, Reeds, Reeds, Reeds | 4 Reeds | 6 Food | Hearth | 2x2† | 200 | 1 |
| Mushroom Log | 3 | 5.8% | Logs | — | 3 Food | Inside Cliff | 1x4 | 100 | 1 |
| Paddy | — | 8.4% | Clay | 1 Clay | 4 Food | Mud | 2x2† | 40 | 1 |
| Pear Farm | 4 | 5% | Bamboo | 1 Bamboo | 4 Food | Tree | 2x2† | 50 | 1 |
| Seaweed Farm | 4 | 4.2% | Bamboo, Bamboo | — | 4 Food | Water | 1x4 | 200 | 1 |
| Walker Fishing Platform | 4 | 1.6% | Logs, Logs, Logs | — | 2 Food | Walker | 2x2† | 1000 | 3 |
What matters in that table:
- The three cheap openers. Crop Row (1 Reeds → 4 Food, on green grass, 8.4% appearance chance), Paddy (1 Clay → 4 Food, on mud, grows fully when flooded, 8.4%) and the Bakery as an attachment (Clay, Clay; consumes 1 Reeds → 1 Food, 8.4%) are the non-karma, high-chance options. The Reed Field in the Resources table (1 Clay → 4 Reeds, on mud or dry grass, 5.4%) is what feeds both the Bakery and the Paddy economy.
- Mighty Pie is the biggest single food structure in the game — 4 Reeds in, 6 Food out — but it must be placed on the Hearth, so a village gets exactly one.
- Fishmonger is the highest-chance Food technology on the wiki (9.2%) and turns 1 Food into 2. Its description adds why it matters: it accepts any type of Food despite what the in-game encyclopedia says, and it returns Meals "which do not degrade".
- Free producers exist but you cannot count on them. Chef's Wok (Ceramics, Hearth, 2 Food per cycle, no consumable) is one per village. Crop Row and Paddy are free in materials but tied to terrain. Several houses skip the Food requirement outright: Karamana Houseboat (Nomad Houses: "does not require Food to produce"), Clay Huts (Eagerness: "First Brave often requires no Food") and Thatched Huts (Randomly Free: spawning "occasionally costs no resources"). Three more skip it conditionally on weather: Frilled House (Wind Rations), Snow Spire House (Snow Rations) and Thatched Spire House (Rain Rations) — their consumable requirement "is ignored" while that weather is happening. Serrano's A-side replaces it altogether (Silk Outfits under Step 4).
- Crop Row is fragile in a way the build menu does not shout about: "it needs to be placed on green grass, and will need to be rebuilt if the tiles underneath it become anything other than fertile grass". The Permaculture passive is the fix — exhausted crops "grow fertile grass around them".
Step 3 — houses: population, weather cover and the attachment trap
Houses are the only source of population, and the house you take also fixes the elemental resistances of all your structures. Full table, ordered by technology group, with the wait-a-moment properties underneath:

Protections are read from each house's own Protections block. "None" means the page lists no protection for that element — that is what the wiki renders, not an inference.
Every placeable property the wiki records for a house, and which houses carry it:

The decisions inside that data:
- Population cap is the hard limit. Sizes run Small 2, Medium 3, Large 4, Huge 5, Gargantuan 6, Enormous 8 — except the Gosanke Harborhouse, which is listed as Enormous at 30 and is the only Shelter technology that can be built once per Challenge, capping you at 30 population for the whole run. The Metropolis achievement ("Grow a village to a city with a population of 60") tells you what the game considers a large village.
- The best weather house is not the biggest. Kiva Burrowed House (3 Bamboo, 800 health, karma 3) reads None/Full/Full/Full — full rain, wind and snow cover, with the wiki's own caveat that it is still exposed to high tide and flooding. Rotunda (Full/Full/Full/None) and Vrisk House are the other standouts, and Rotunda also stores rainwater and fertilises the soil around it.
- Flooding is its own hazard and most houses ignore it. Multi-Storey is the property that fixes it (Clay Spire House, Lamba House, Ghostcaller House, Thatched Multi-story House), Clay Spire House "do not collapse when they flood", and the Karamana Houseboat simply floats.
- Chosen Walls and Chosen Roof are not a cost you can plan for. Per the Materials page: the Chosen Walls are "the first 2 resources from your house's construction resources" (two random materials, one drawn from what is around your Hearth), the Chosen Roof is the rest of the list, and a Shelter with no Chosen Walls uses its last listed material plus one unit of Reeds. So the house technology you take at the start is your wall and roof economy for the whole run — Bamboo Focus, Bricks Focus, Slate Roof, Terracotta Roof and Wood Roof exist to rewrite that.
- "No Attachments" is the trap with the longest fuse. Clay Huts, Log Tents, Thatched Huts, Kiva Burrowed House, Lamba House, Rotunda, Vrisk House, Karamana Houseboat, Gosanke Harborhouse and Ghostcaller House refuse artisan attachments — and, because Inspiration is filtered for compatibility, taking one of them at the start can permanently remove attachment technologies from every future offer. That is exactly the example the Technologies page uses, with the Vrisk House and the Blastpowder Distillery.
- Attachments are where a lot of the economy lives. Bakery, Lumberjack, Silk Loom, Silk Harvester, Topsoil Digger, Egg Harvester, Mastadon Milker, Ceramics Production, Canvas Press, Adobe Oven, Firebird Perch, Pellet Collector, Blastpowder Boiler, Bowyer, Swordsmith, Spearsmith, Grenade Wright, Library, Powderstack, Whiptwister, Sauna, House Extension and the Beast attachments are all "Attachment" placement, i.e. they override a house's production. A village that picked an attachment-less house has a materially smaller tech pool.
- House Extension is one of only two technologies that do not override the house's production, and it adds 2 to the population cap.
Step 4 — the passives, complete
Passives are the cheapest leverage in the game: they cost karma but no materials, and several of them are handed to you for free by a house or a Thinker side. The complete list as the wiki records it:
| Passive | Group | Karma | Chance | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spectral Units | Blueprint | 6 | 0.9% | Houses no longer require Food but only produce ghosts. |
| Stilt Foundations | Blueprint | 6 | 1.2% | Houses always start stilted off the ground a bit. |
| Lightfootedness | Group 1 | 5 | 1.2% | Units will not alert Beasts or other towns they pass by. |
| Lotus Hooks | Group 1 | 6 | 1.5% | Boats will collect Lotus they pass over. |
| Permaculture | Group 1 | 2 | 2.2% | Crops grow fertile grass around them when exhausted. |
| Sharpened Axes | Group 1 | 3 | 1.9% | Doubles Braves' damage and chopping speed. |
| Snow Outfits | Group 1 | 3 | 3.1% | Braves will still work and move at full speed during snowfall. |
| Bamboo Focus | Group 2 | 3 | 2.2% | Replace all Reeds construction Materials with Bamboo. |
| Ceramic Mandate | Group 2 | 1 | 3.8% | After spawning, a water-filled Ceramic is placed in front of your house for quick firefighting access. |
| Fish Lures | Group 2 | 6 | 1.5% | Boats will collect Fish they pass over. |
| Light Planks | Group 2 | 3 | 2.5% | Replace all Reeds construction Materials with wood Planks and increase your house fire protection. |

| Thinking Caps | Group 2 | 3 | 2.5% | Braves work faster during production in attachments. |
| Defensive Spikes | Group 3 | 3 | 1.5% | Add defensive spikes around your Hearth to damage intruders. |
| Enchanted Firejars | Group 3 | 6 | 1.5% | Units automatically hide in a protective magic jar when fire is near but no longer bother firefighting. |
| Hollow Bricks | Group 3 | 5 | 2.5% | Replace all Bricks construction Materials with Ceramics but your houses become vulnerable to wind damage. |
| Runed Axes | Group 3 | 2 | 2.2% | Chopping a tree yields an extra portion of Logs. |
| Silk Outfits | Group 3 | 4 | 1.5% | Braves no longer cost Food and instead cost Fabric to produce. |
| Stone Focus | Group 3 | 3 | 2.5% | Replace all Logs construction Materials with Bricks and increase house fire protection. |

The ones that change how a run plays, rather than just how fast it goes:
- Wooden Nails — Braves no longer stand at the structure and hammer before fetching materials, so "structures are built very quickly"; the wiki notes it still wants a little micromanagement because Braves hammer a few times first. Free with Achiote A.
- Baskets — Braves "move at full speed, even when carrying Materials", which the wiki calls "a very good Passive technology to have". Free with Thatched Longhouse and Charnushka A.
- Sharpened Axes — double damage and double chopping speed; the wiki says Braves dealing double damage "very nearly makes combat trivial". Free with Log Tents and Garam A.
- Thinking Caps — a 1.5x production speed boost for Braves working in any attachment.
- Runed Axes — every tree chopped yields a second unit of Logs.
- Sturdy Shovels — 25% chance to dig Clay from a deposit (clay soil or an anthill) without destroying it.
- Permaculture — when an exhausted Crop Row disappears, the tiles around it turn into green grass, which is how you keep re-planting Crop Rows on the same ground.
- Chimneys — houses stop bursting into flame spontaneously, "completely negating the effects of the Fire Season event".
- Lightfootedness — removes the automatic aggression trigger from Beasts and hostile units; they still defend themselves if attacked, but stop attacking on sight.
- Silk Outfits — replaces Food with Fabric as the consumable for all Shelter technologies, which is a complete re-plan of your food economy, not an upgrade.
- Rattan Hats and Snow Outfits — Braves keep working through rain and snow respectively.
Step 5 — hazard cover, and which structure answers which event
The wiki names the events it is protecting you from in the entries themselves: Fire Season (fire always starts in a Shelter structure), Rainstorm and Snowfall (clouds that the Windmill pushes away), Night of the Dead (ghosts), lightning strikes that start fires, and high tide or flooding. The Protection technologies, in full:

| Windmill | 2 | 7.6% | Fabric, Fabric, Fabric, Logs, Logs, Bamboo, Bamboo, Clay, Reeds | — | — | — | 4x4 Diamond | 400 | 5 |
The mapping that matters:
- Fire. Well (2 Logs, no karma, 7.6%) is the one you want: "Once built, a Well cannot be destroyed or moved", and it carries infinite health. Shaduf (1 Bamboo, 12.8% — the highest appearance chance in the group) must sit on a cliff edge above water and is itself vulnerable, so the wiki's advice is to place several. Rain Collector (Clay, Clay, 8.9%) also fertilises nearby soil when full. Water Syphon (1 Bamboo, 8.9%) taps Trunkwoods and cacti, which is the Flatlands answer. Ceramics double as firefighting — Ceramics Production spawns them filled with water. Chimneys (passive) stops houses from spontaneously igniting, which the wiki says "completely negat[es] the effects of the Fire Season event", Cloudcatcher (Ceramics, Ceramics, Logs, Bamboo, karma 2) stores and releases rain, and Skyhook (Clay, Clay, Blastpowder, Bamboo, karma 2) holds clouds over a chosen point.
- Rain and snow. Cliff Awning (1 Fabric, 8.9%) protects whatever is below it regardless of build materials. Rattan Hats and Snow Outfits keep Braves working through rain and snow. Which houses resist what follows the wall material rather than the tier: the Materials page says Clay buildings "are generally more resistant to fire and wind, but crumble in the rain and snow", and that Reeds "don't offer much fire protection but can be thatched for solid snow and rain protection". The table above shows it plainly — Clay Manor, Clay Spire House and Tiwa House are Fire Full / Rain None, while Haken House, Rattan Home, Tressed Farmhouse, Thatched Spire House and Wood Longhouse are the reverse.
- Wind. Windmill (karma 2, single-use) pushes one cloud formation away at a time; the Windcatcher uses wind, producing Clay significantly faster when the biome is windy.
- Lightning. Lightning Totem (1 Logs, karma 4, 7.6%) absorbs strikes in an area — but "any unit that happens to be standing nearby will get a jolt", so place it away from the paths your Braves walk.
- Ghosts. Warding Lanterns (Bamboo, Fabric, Fabric, karma 6) stop Night of the Dead ghosts from approaching. Plan totems with room for later lanterns.
- Raids and hostile Thinkers. Watchtower (Bamboo, Bamboo, 6.5%, Starting group) warns you a raid is preparing; Town Walls (1 Bricks, karma 5) block movement, with the wiki's warning that they can only go on flat ground; Jar of Amnesia (Ceramics x3, karma 5) ends combat outright but sends your units home too; Isolation Tower (Logs x2, Bricks x4, karma 3, 1000 health) hides a Thinker, including from grenades and ranged fire, though not from wind or fire; Alarm Instrument (1 Logs, 8.1%) is the only technology that changes the UI, adding a select-all-units button.
If a village is caught out, note the priority order the wiki implies: fires start in a Shelter, so the house you chose set your default fire resistance before you built anything else. The houses that already list Fire Full are Rotunda, Tiwa House, Alkazar Homestead, Tulou Townhouse, Vrisk House, Clay Manor, Clay Spire House, Clay Tower House, Snow Spire House and Sturdy Tower House — and Round Umbrella (Step 9) is the cheapest way to force any round house to full protection.
Step 6 — movement, elevation, and the cheapest way to grow a village

The economy of movement in Kainga is unusual and worth internalising:
- Stilt Pads and Stilt Elevations are the cheapest terrain in the game. Both are 1x1, both list no build materials at all, and Stilt Pads come with a 6.8% appearance chance. They cannot change elevation themselves and must be built in straight lines, but long runs of them replace Bridges and Platforms in most situations — and Stilt Elevations, which come with a stair variant, do change elevation one level at a time.
- Bridge is the flexible one — "virtually no length limit", but it obeys physics and a long bridge sags; longer bridges also cost more Bamboo.
- Bamboo Ladder (1 Bamboo, 1x1) versus Climbing Pole (1 Logs, 1x4). Both must be built from the bottom, so they grant upward access. The wiki warns that Bamboo Ladders still have pathfinding bugs that can strand units at either end, whereas Climbing Poles do not but need four times the footprint.
- Overhang and Mud Arches expand buildable land off a cliff face; Overhang costs 1 Logs with no karma.
- Water access runs through Platform (2 Logs, water-only, 4x4), the Group 5 docks — Canoe Dock, Sampan Dock, Totora Dock and Dragon Boat Dock, all 2x4 and each with its own consumable — and the boats themselves: Landbarge, Gokstad Corsair, Rickshaw (Group 4, 3 Bamboo) and the balloons.
Step 7 — the neighbours: trade, gifts, demands, and only then combat
Combat buildings produce the units; diplomacy structures change whether you need them.

- Trade Table (Bamboo, Fabric, karma 2, 5.7%) sets up ongoing 1:1 trade routes — you specify what you give and what you want — and standing improves with every trade. The catch is stated plainly: if a route another village started goes quiet for long enough, it stops and your standing drops.
- Demand Table (Bamboo, Fabric, karma 2, 4.9%) lets you request resources for nothing; satisfying a demand improves standing, and declining one — or accepting and then failing to deliver — damages it.
- Royal Gift (4x Random Resource, karma 2) improves standing significantly, but the finished gift "must be carried inside the territory of the opposing village, so care must be taken not to accidentally start a fight".
- Market Tower puts a small overhang on every Shelter in the village so Materials can be stored under it without degrading — a second answer to the same problem Storage solves, for villages that never took Storage.
- Burial Mound (2 Bricks, Clay, Clay, karma 6) is the roguelite hook: it carries one or more of your killed units into the next Challenge, where they spawn as ghosts with 1 hit point. Cliff Coffins (Logs, 2 Planks), Combat Memorial (2 Bricks, Fabric) and Funeral Boat (2 Reeds) are the same effect in different build materials.
- Combat units are gated behind their own buildings, and each one has a stated role: Barracks (Warriors — "the most balanced and versatile combat Unit"), Archery Range (Archers — fast, small damage, "useful in larger numbers"), Spear Laager (Spears, melee that reaches twice as far as other melee), Rifle Casern (Rifles — long range, high damage, lower accuracy and rate of fire), Temple (Priests, which convert hostile units "5 at a time"), Grenadier Calefactor (Grenadiers — arcing bombs, best against buildings), and Stable (Beastmasters, which are tamers rather than fighters). The attachment forms swap a building for a house slot: Swordsmith, Bowyer, Spearsmith, Powderstack, Library, Grenade Wright, Whiptwister. Reefshot and Seamine are water defences — the Reefshot is fixed to a 180° arc, the Seamine is a manually steered mine that destroys the boat and everyone on it.

| Walker Water Jars | 2 | 3.7% | Logs, Clay, Clay | — | — | Walker | 2x2† | 800 | 3 |
The wiki's Beast list is small but every entry is a multiplier on something you already built: Beast Farmstalks (Bamboo, Logs, karma 2) is called "one of the most reliable methods" of Food production; Egg Incubator takes Food and turns it into tamed Beasts; Mastadon Kiln (Clay x4, Logs x2) regrows a fully-tamed Mastadon from a dead one's shell; saddles let Walkers, Mastadons and Trudgers carry a small (1x2, 2x2 or 4x4 Diamond) Shelter on their backs; Beast War Drum makes friendly units near the mounted beast attack 1.25x faster; Beast Incense Emitter regenerates the health of nearby friendly units; and Beast War Rig reflects melee damage back at the attacker.
Step 9 — Unique technologies: the combos worth engineering first
Uniques never appear as Inspiration. You have to discover both parent technologies, and then the wiki's rule applies: one of the two parents — always the first one in the formula — is replaced by the Unique. If several become available at once you may only take one. Some Uniques have a single formula; most accept several. These are the 44 that have their own infobox on the wiki, with their karma cost and build materials:

The ones worth steering towards, using their own descriptions from the wiki. Note that thirteen of the combination results the wiki names — Bardiche, Buckets of Fish, E-Fish-ency, Firelance Casern, Firelance Rifles, Foraging, Halberdier Garrison, Hermitage, Incense Chapel, Incense Recepticle, Plank Axes, Whitebarrel Casern and Whitebarrel Rifles — have no infobox of their own, so neither their cost nor their effect can be quoted here.
- Raised Paddy (1 Bricks) and Raised Reed Field (1 Bricks) — "can also be placed on any soil type rather than just mud", freeing the two terrain-locked starting farms.
- Efficient Clay Pit (no build materials listed, karma 6) — "continues to produce even if its most recently-produced unit of Clay has not been used", i.e. it no longer stalls. Petrified Wood Clay Pit instead "has a chance of producing Logs in addition to Clay".
- Fertilized Crops (1 Blastpowder, karma 6) — Crop Row built and fed on Blastpowder, with growth "exponentially … faster".
- Ceramics Carver (Bamboo, Bricks, karma 3) — "two units of Ceramics for each unit of Bricks", and it removes the Ceramics line's dependence on Clay.
- Brick Pie Oven (2 Bricks, karma 4) — the Bakery's recipe at double yield: 1 Reeds into 2 Food instead of 1.
- Pear Pie (1 Food, karma 6) and Fish Pie (2 Food, karma 6) — Hearth pies on inputs other than Reeds, still 6 Food per cycle.
- Longbow Archery (Longbow Bowyer as the attachment form) — archers become Longbows with much longer range and more damage; Shield Barracks → Shieldsmith trades Warrior damage for blocking; Axe Barracks → Axesmith trades blocking for splash damage; Acid Bombs, Bee Bombs and Fire Bombs convert Grenadiers into units that melt, panic or ignite their targets.
- Round Umbrella (1 Fabric, karma 1) — "raise the resistance of any Shelter structure they're built on to full", for round houses only. The cheapest defensive upgrade on the list.
- Plank Bridge (2 Planks, karma 2) — a Bridge that does not sag, because it is not affected by physics. Stone Arches, Stairs (1 Planks), Irrigation (a Canal at any elevation near a Well) and the Furnace / Windmill Elevator and Drawbridge line (autonomous, no Brave required) do the same job for elevation and access.
- The Burial Mound family — Cliff Coffins, Combat Memorial, Funeral Boat — all duplicate the "carry your dead into the next Challenge as 1-hit-point ghosts" effect in different build materials.
Step 10 — Thinkers: what each side actually starts with
Nine Thinker infoboxes on the wiki (Kala and Jeera appear together and Kala alone). "As A-side" means the field is blank in that side's infobox, and the template inherits the A-side value.
| Thinker | Side | Health | Speed | Starting units | Starting materials | Passive | Thinker bonus |

| Achiote | A | 400 | 20 | Brave × 6 | Logs × 2 / Bamboo × 4 | Wooden Nails | Mighty Warhammer |

| Sumac | B | 160 | 25 | Brave × 4 / Censer × 1 | Bamboo × 3 / Logs × 1 | Stilt Foundations | — |
Which side to start with, from the wiki's own notes:
- Sumac A is the tutorial Thinker and the intended beginner run: 4 Braves, Food x3 plus Logs x1, and the Structure Safety passive that lets structures be placed half over a cliff edge.
- Achiote A starts with six Braves — more than anyone else — but the guardian must live: "once the guardian is defeated Achiote is banished as well". Blessed Scaffolding lets Braves build any structure without the resources.
- Garam A is the fast, aggressive, food-poor start: speed 35 (the fastest Thinker), two Warriors and the Sharpened Axes passive, but 3 Braves, no Food, and — per the wiki — not enough Fabric to build the Skylamp Festival, which forces a Fabric-producing resource technology out of an Inspiration that may not offer one.
- Ajowan A is a jar. The Thinker has 1 hit point and speed 25; the Alabastron has 200 hit points and speed 0 and must be carried by a Brave, so the real thing you are defending is a stationary pot.
- Serrano A cannot walk. Speed 0: the Thinker sends an orb that the wiki says is "bound by traversible terrain" — no crossing chasms or water — and which can be blocked by trees, ruins and other map resources, while Serrano stands still and exposed. His Braves do not need Food at all (Silk Outfits).
- Kala on his own has 100 hit points and speed 20 — the wiki recommends getting the Beast Spirit House Festival, which is the only way to re-summon Jeera.
- Galanga walks on stilts and ignores difficult terrain such as flooding and snow; Galanga A starts with four Beastmasters and Braided Rope (nearly double taming speed).
- Charnushka is the only Thinker that can produce new Inspiration at will (via the Boardgame Challenge festival), and his pack speeds up production in nearby buildings including houses.
Traps, and the places the wiki contradicts itself
- Resource Totems are the difficulty dial. Each adds +1 to the world Ante, permanently, for the rest of the Challenge. Building three totems to reach one clay deposit is how a comfortable run becomes a fire season.
- Only land you have claimed is worked. Braves will not harvest outside claimed land; the starting Hearth radius is small, and Totems are the only way to extend it.
- Absent protections are real. In the housing table,
Noneis what the wiki's own infobox renders for a missing element, and the house you take sets the resistance of every structure you build. Kiva Burrowed House (3 Bamboo, karma 3, None/Full/Full/Full, 800 health) is the outlier that solves weather outright. - A no-attachment house shrinks your future options, permanently. Attachments are a large slice of the Resources, Food and Combat lists, and incompatible technologies stop being offered at all. The wiki's own example is Vrisk House plus Blastpowder Distillery.
- Houses must be staffed. Shelters "must be occupied by at least one Brave to produce" — an empty house is furniture.
- Crop Row is terrain-dependent and rebuildable. Losing the fertile grass under it destroys the investment; Permaculture is the patch.
- Fishing Net is not a passive income. It "does fall apart every time it produces Food", which makes it a micromanagement structure masquerading as a cheap one.
- Mushroom Hut is repaired with Food, not Logs. The cheapest house in the game (1 Logs) charges its repair bill to your food supply, and it is grown, not built, so it takes a long time to appear.
- Well cannot be moved once built. It is also the only structure in the Protection list with infinite health.
- Lightning Totem hurts your own units standing nearby.
- Jar of Amnesia affects both sides — it forces all units, friendly included, back to their Hearths and disrupts production.
- Wrong biome, wrong wall material. Since Chosen Walls are drawn from your house's build list, a house chosen in one biome can demand a material the map cannot supply in quantity. Bricks Focus, Bamboo Focus, Solid Planks, Sturdy Planks, Light Planks, Stone Focus and the various roof passives exist to force the conversion.
- Things the wiki gets wrong, so you do not chase them: the Silk Loom's description says "The Canvas Press produces Fabric from nothing" (its own encyclopedia line correctly calls it a silk loom); the Ceramic Crop Pots description says it "will continuously produce new Bamboo" (the encyclopedia line says corn, and Bamboo is the Potted Bamboo's job); the Walker Firebombs description is the Walker Water Jars text; the Uniques Tinkerer description is copy-pasted from the Karma Shop; and the Unique table on the wiki lists some combos in both orders (for example "Fisherman's Warf + Fishing Net" and "Fishing Net + Fisherman's Warf"), which is the same combination written twice; and the Shelter page's own
Protectionsblocks mis-key the fire field on four houses — Embedded Home and Isolated Home writeFire=with a capital F and Frilled House and Kiva Burrowed House writefire-Fullwith no equals sign — so all four render Fire: None in the infobox even though the Kiva's own description calls it immune to all weather hazards. - One festival is documented as broken. The Bamboo Telescope (Serrano's Festival) page says: "At the time of writing, Bamboo Telescope does not work and will always result in a warning message."
- The wiki's Festival coverage is mostly empty. The Festival page names 38 Festivals as headings but carries an infobox — i.e. real costs — for only 7 of them. Those seven are below; the other 31, including the Challenge-completing Festival for any given run, cannot be costed from this source.
| Festival | Locked to | Builders | Build materials | Effect (wiki description) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blessed Scaffolding | Achiote | 8 | 3 Bamboo | "Completely builds a structure, no matter what resources are needed"; placed on a rooftop |
| Beast Spirit House | Kala / Kala & Jeera | 8 | 1 Bamboo, 1 Food | Re-summons Jeera if placed on Kala; otherwise locates and can awaken a Crustacean |
| Amnesia Coffer | Galanga B | 10 | 2 Logs, 2 Clay | Amnesia gas that ends combat; reusable, unlike the Jar of Amnesia |
| Balloon Call | Garam B | 14 | 1 Logs, 4 Fabric | Summons a Lanna Balloon without a dock |
| Bannered Grove | Garam | 10 | 1 Fabric | Grows a forest between banners; reusable |
| Log Bonfire | Garam | 10 | 4 Logs | Grows Reeds and fertilises crops; can be attached over the Hearth |
| Bamboo Telescope | Serrano | 6 | 1 Logs, 4 Bamboo | Steals Technologies and Inspiration; the wiki states it currently does not work |
What I could not verify, and what that means
- No production rates anywhere. The wiki carries no cycle times, so this guide gives units per cycle and nothing else. If a reader wants Food-per-minute, the source does not have it and neither does this page.
- The wiki's Food and Resources numbers are from 2024 (last edited 17 November 2024 and 28 July 2024) and therefore predate Update 1.2 "Points of Interest". The Shelter, Other, Materials and passive pages were edited in 2026. Whether any Food or Resources cost changed in 1.2, or in 1.2.21, is not recorded on the wiki.
- "Chance to Appear" is a wiki-derived figure, and the wiki's own note says the per-Challenge probability may differ.
- Footprints marked † are absent from the page, not small. The infobox prints a 2x2 default, or the literal
Noneon the fourteen Beast and Walker technologies; neither is data. - Nothing in this guide was checked in game. Every figure is as the Kainga Encyclopedia stores it, read as raw wikitext on the dates in the version section.
- The Festivals the wiki does not document — the other three-dozen Thinker and Challenge Festivals — cannot be costed at all from this source, including the Challenge-completing Festival for any given run.

Guide changelog
What has changed in this guide, newest first.
- 2026-10-04Verified against sources: ~1,700 figures re-checked against the Kainga Encyclopedia's raw wikitext (api.php) and Steam's news/store APIs for app 1269710 — 1.2.21, 25 June 2025. 47 figures were wrong and are corrected: the four Shelter protection blocks the wiki itself mis-keys (Embedded Home, Isolated Home, Frilled House and Kiva Burrowed House all render Fire: None, not Full/Half); the 23 Unit/Beast outputs and the 7 combat buildings' 1 Brave input that the Consumes/Produces columns had dropped, plus Egg Incubator consuming 1 Egg; the Resource Totem, Karma Shop and Uniques Tinkerer health, which the wiki states as Unknown; the Enormous House property (8 on the Ghostcaller House, 30 on the Gosanke Harborhouse) and those two houses' population caps. Prose lists of Fire-Full houses corrected to match. The places where the wiki disagrees with itself are reported, not resolved.
- 2026-10-04Published. Kainga: Seeds of Civilization 1.2.21 (25 June 2025, after Update 1.2 "Points of Interest"); built from the official Kainga Encyclopedia at kainga.wiki.gg — the Technologies page and all eleven of its category subpages, Materials, Thinkers, Technologies/Other, Technologies/Festival, Achievements and the TechInfo / PassiveTechInfo / Protections / ThinkerInfo templates, all read as raw wikitext through api.php — plus Steam's news and store APIs for app 1269710.
